Two of us headed to the School of Artisan Food for a Real Bread Campaign gathering on the 24 January. Located on the head-spinningly huge Welbeck Estate (15,000 acres!), the School teaches long and short courses in baking, dairy and butchery.
Real Bread Campaign co-ordinator Chris Young was there, along with Andrew Whitley (of Bread Matters fame), Tom Herbert (Hobbs House Bakery), Emmanuel Hadjiandreou and Wayne Caddy (The School of Artisan Food), Tom Baker (Loaf Social Enterprise), and Mark Simmonds (Co-operatives UK). There was a good range of stories to tell, from newly started bakeries, to the seriously experienced (25 years or more professional baking knowledge!). There was great bread from the Welbeck Bakehouse below the School, and extremely generous hosting from the School including informal tours of the dairy and butchery with some impressively knowledgeable and enthusiastic teachers answering our questions.
